History
The Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism at the University of Buenos Aires (FADU-UBA) stands as one of the most representative university buildings in contemporary Argentine architecture. Designed by Eduardo Catalano + Associates and inaugurated in 1985, it occupies the historic Pavilion III of the University City (Ciudad Universitaria), establishing itself as an emblematic space for generations of architects, designers, and urban planners.
Its layout is structured around a large, multi-story central courtyard—illuminated by overhead light—that serves as the building's heart and the primary gathering space for students, faculty, and exhibitions. Circulation paths and workshops are arranged around this core, organized via a modular grid that lends flexibility and clarity to the entire complex.
The building's architecture honestly expresses its concrete structure, incorporating spacious circulation areas, natural light and ventilation, open spaces, and solar shading systems that align with the principles of modern architecture. More than just an educational facility, FADU became a hub for exchange, experimentation, and professional training for thousands of professionals. This edition of the CONCRET Collection reinterprets one of the most significant buildings in Argentine university architecture, transforming a space deeply linked to the teaching of architectural design into a concrete design object.
